Smart Home

At first it was just the Smart Phone.   But now there’s Smart TV’s, Smart Tablets Smart Watches, Smart Fridges, Smart Washing machines, Smart bands, Smart keychains and even Smart Homes.  It seems like everyone wants everything to be connected to the internet, and if it connects then its Smart!  So what is so smart about being connected to the internet? Is it all just the latest hype and short lived fad?  And why would anyone even want a Smart Home?

Well a Smart Home is more than just being able to connect your home to the internet.   At the very simplest level, a Smart Home is a connected home that communicates with you and keeps you up to date on what is happening.  As this is often done using the internet, marketing often confuses internet connected with being “Smart”.  But being Smart is more than just communications.  This connectivity and communications are simply the foundations that enable your home to do more.  The real Smarts come when your home is able to actively adjust and respond to your lifestyle.  And that’s what separates a Smart home from a normal home.  A Smart Home enables you to spend less time managing your home and more time enjoying your home and the things that really matter like family and friends.

So how does a Smart Home do this.  It's probably easiest to illustrate this by giving examples.  A Smart Home can help you:

  • Save time by receiving the delivery of your latest online purchase even if you aren’t home; (Smart Doorbell with intercom can inform you when that courier arrives, and provide instructions on where they should leave your parcel even if you aren’t home)
  • Not worry about whether you turned your stove off in your rush to get that gourmet casserole to your friend’s party while it was still hot; (Smart Camera in your kitchen will allow you to visually check that your stove is off and everything is clear without having to go back home to check)
  • Reassure you that your kids did arrive safely home after school; (Smart Door Sensors and Camera’s will let you check if the kids have actually gotten home and arrived safely after school)
  • Relax in comfort after work as it ensures that you arrive back to a cool home in summer without the cost of leaving the A/C on all day; (Smart Thermostats can automatically drop/lower window blinds, startup fans or A/C in the hour before you get home so its cool by the time you arrive)
  • Avoid expensive repairs for water damage from leaking pipes or accidently overfilling basins or tubs; (Smart leak sensors can give you early warning of excessive moisture in wet areas so that you can act before any damage is done)
  • Keep the kids focused on doing their homework first by removing distractions of TV/internet; (Smart TV’s, Computers and Powerpoints can be programmed to provide kids access to devices when you allow, even if you aren’t home to watch them)
  • Make it easier for you to record your health/take medication; (Smart devices can automatically record your blood sugar/heart rate measurements, while alarm’s and Smart Lights can automatically remind and light the way to your medicine cabinet)

As you can see, none of these benefits are simply achieved by connecting a device to the internet.  The Smart’s actually come from how you use and setup these internet connected devices.  Sam’s Smart Home Services can help you assess your needs, your current home and devices, and give you advice on what needs to be updated or newly installed.   But most importantly Sam’s Smart Home Service can help you with the setup and configuration to take your home from simply being internet connected to become a genuinely Smart Home for you to enjoy!
