Potential Policy Directions

The NSW Liberals & Nationals have already released a number of policies and discussion papers designed to improve the quality of education in NSW including:

  • Encouraging Mature Aged Entry into the NSW Teaching Profession:
Recruitment of high quality teachers into the public education system to boost teacher numbers.
  • Increasing Preschool Participation:
Boosting preschool participation rates to ensure at least 95 per cent of four-year olds attend preschool two days a week.

In addition, further proposals to enhance NSW’s performance in the areas of education and skills include:

  • Shifting the responsibility for the provision of preschool education from the Department of Community Services to the Department of Education and Training to ensure quality learning, a simpler system for parents and a more efficient system for taxpayers.
  • Creating  a ‘one-stop-shop’ to provide international students with essential and reliable information about studying and living in Australia. Currently, NSW lags behind other states in providing credible, up-to-date and accessible information for international students. The economic contribution of the international student market to the NSW economy amounts to $4.8 billion.
