Potential Policy Directions

The NSW Liberals & Nationals have already released a number of policies that will make NSW communities safer including our:

  • Highway Patrol Plan:
Plan to put Highway Patrol Officers back where they most are needed – on our roads and highways.
  • Safe Driving Incentive Scheme:
Proposal to reward safe drivers and encourage others to improve by cutting licence renewal fees by 50 per cent for people with driving records free of offences for at least five years.

In addition to these policies, some additional proposals the NSW Liberals & Nationals believe warrant examination to see how they can enhance safety in NSW’s community:

  • A state-wide audit of all police stations to ascertain the real extent of police capacity in our neighbourhoods. The community deserves to know what police stations are still open, which are fully staffed and which stations are operational 24-hours a day. With this information, police officers and resources can be effectively allocated to make our communities safer.
  • A revised approach to rehabilitation programs that sees offenders commence rehabilitation programs during remand and continue without interruption after release with the purpose of reducing rates of recidivism.

  1. An old approach to managing Alcohol Related Crime and Anti Social Behaviour needs to be reintroduced.
Detaining high risk Intoxicated Persons in Police cells for 8 hours or until they are no longer intoxicated is the most effective way to prevent these people from committing crime or being victimized by crime.
Currently almost a 100% of calls for Police assistance to deal with high risk intoxicated persons results in the person being "Moved On" to continue their risky behaviour away from the supervision of the original caller or Police.
RSA compliance has been dramatically increased as it should but effective 'Street Policing' has been totally reduced. Plenty of Police looking but not taking preventative action.
Until this is addressed Alcohol Related crime will only continue to increase.
  2. Thanks for your comments Craig, I referred this to our Shadow Minister for Police Michael Gallacher for his consideration.
